Blue and grey

They really should be brown.

Even today I look at her and still expect them to be brown.

Her skin is sallow, and the mop of dark hair frames her chubby face like an ill fitting Elizabeth Taylor wig. They themselves are huge. Wide open, full of magnetic focus, as if she were some sort of floppy hypnotist.

Nevertheless, they should be brown.

Instead, I see them sparkle out bright blue in the sharp sunlight of these Spring weekend mornings, turning metallic grey as the days turn into evenings.

They live and breathe with her, they dance on their tip-toes when she laughs or screeches, limbs flying in every direction. They hold themselves focused and sure as she takes you in, her whole body stiff as she examines your change of expression.

They hold their gaze until she has passed her judgement, a return to the dancing orbs and smiles, akin to a Roman thumbs-up. A full face frown the thumbs-down, the sentencing to death of he or she who fails to entertain her.

They should be brown, but surprisingly and wonderfully, they are not.

Beautiful eyes, I have to say she looks like you! Maybe it's the hairdo!

My god, but she is a beautiful child. She is just a fairy child. And those eyes? They might still turn brown. But they will ALWAYS look at you with more love and approval than you can ever imagine. Whatever color they are, she adore you from them.

anyone would think you liked this kid or something.

Gorgeous coloring!. Skin is pure and spotless...btw her eyes could still change.... My kids had blue eyes till they were a few months...then again, she could have picked up someone's recessive blue gene...

Mwa said...

She's a beauty!

I don't get my girl's blue eyes either. I have brown eyes, so do my siblings and parents. She must have got it from her grandfather on the other side and her great grandfather on mine. Freaky.

Mr. B's eyes stayed blue/gray for about a year, then they turned brown. So there still is time.

Oh yeah, damn she's pretty!

Hockeymandad said...

They are precious. No matter what color.

Ed said...

Don't ask me how -- because I don't know -- but they may change yet. And they'll still be just as beautiful!

She's ridiculously gorgeous.

AnnD said...

I wish I were around to take photos of those eyes! They are truly amazing and beautiful!

Angie [A Whole Lot of Nothing] said...

She looks JUST like you.

Normally, that wouldn't be a good thing, but in her case, it makes her gorgeous.

geeks in rome said...

she is stunning!! and that hair is going to be a ravishing auburn. Buy that shotgun now, Daddy!

DrSpouse said...

They change in the same way that children have lighter skin than adults - they get more melanin. So they may still become brown.

Kori said...

She is as lovely as can be; I LOVE that hair.

areyoukiddingme said...

6-12 months is when they will assume their permanent color. But, if you have enough recessive genes working for you, those gorgeous eyes may stay that color.

(My daughter has blue eyes, although I have green eyes and my husband has brown eyes.)

They are beautiful blue eyes.

Ditto on the eye changing comments, though. Oscar's were a beautiful hazel until he was two; now they are brown. Miles's eyes were a steely gray, but they turned brown as well, before he even turned one.

People in the Sun said...

When people say my kids are beautiful, and then they say they look like me, I take that as a compliment. It's like they're saying I'm beautiful, right? Us low-self-esteem guys need all we can get.

AnnB said...

Whatever about the eyes - that's quite the Elivs quiff she has going on there! Does that take her long to do in the morning? Has she already commandeered the bathroom first thing?

Sarah said...

She is absolutely gorgeous!

i concur with everyone here and i'm positive you and your wife, she is gorgeous no matter what colour of eyes!! i can't get past her crazy hair!!! adorable!

I expected Amy's to be hazel or green and instead, they're bright blue. Seems you never can tell.

She is gorgeous.

Such a dear little sweetheart :)

And yes, they may still change colour.
My eldest sons eyes went from blue to green at 12 - didn't expect it at that age!

Wonderful. My mom's whole side of the family (French) has brown hair and blue eyes. I, alas, did not inherit it. It's such a striking, beautiful combination. Your daughter is a looker. :)

A Free Man said...

They'll probably change, mate. Not to be that guy or anything. Problem is, I am that guy.

Let's say this - she's a gorgeous little girl.

merinz said...

Your daughter is beautiful, but then you know that!

Her eyes could well change yet to brown, or hazel maybe.

How lovely to have all that black hair. It makes her look older than she really is.

River said...

Such beautiful eyes and perfect eyebrows to match.

P.S. I'm told it's quite common for the Irish to have dark hair and blue eyes, Sanne is just following her racial heritage. My Irish High School Math teacher had black hair and blue eyes. (Man, he was gorgeous...Swoon)

Beautiful baby, beautiful picture, beautiful writing! Love your blog!

My youngest niece was born with dark blue eyes and they turned brown after a few months.

Otherwise, as posters above said, you could both be carriers of recessive blue eyed genes, then they might not change. Only time will tell. She's gorgeous whatever colour her eyes are :)

My hubs and I both have dark brown eyes, our son, the most amazing color-shifting hazel eyes. Maybe our kids are changlings?

Barbara said...

She's so beautiful.

You're right, they should be brown but they look so right blue.

Are you sure it was Spencer who did the deed and not some travelling 'Sven' who latched onto one of 'those' pieces of equipment used on ET??

You do still have a sense of humour dont you??? ;)

I have never seen so much hair on such a young baby! Black hair and blue eyes. But whatever colour eyes (and hair) end up, looks like she'll always be a 'harten dief'!

tiff(threeringcircus) said...

What a beautiful post.
So in love.

Wanderlust said...

She is truly gorgeous. Not all babies are gorgeous, you know. Some are not at all cute.

Steve said...

I'm still amazed by all that dark hair.

But beware. My daughter was born with a simlar surprising mop and like you I was surprised when her blue eyes stayed on after the first weeks. Then even more surprising, all her dark hair fell out and grew back as blonde as Goldilocks.

Anonymous said...

Stunning. Your daughter is stunning. Funny, after your post on how she just stares at you some times without smiling or blinking, I thought her new nickname should be Victoria (Beckham).

Anonymous said...

At least they are not gordon brown

Martin said...

@Sniffle - I do think so sir.

@Louise - She thinks she knows it all anyway!

@Tara R. - All I can think of now is Angeline Jolie.

@Barbara - Blue or a steely grey depending on the day, which is weird.

@Gail - Behave youself.

@Geri Atric - She definitely is that.

@tiff(threeringcircus) - Just a little ;-)

@Wanderlust - some are a bit, er, odd, yes.

@Steve - I think there's zero chance of her being blonde anyway!

@Anonymous - hahaha

@Anonymous - Squeek
